We receive lots of enquiries about our perfumes everyday. We understand how hard it is to buy a perfume without trying it out first. We created this guide to help you with your decision making.

Testers

Sadly as an independent and truly handmade business we are not able to offer samples at this point in time. We are certified organic and certified vegan as a brand. Due to regulations we have to get each size variation certified again through these organisations. Additionally, we have to get laboratory tests and upload them onto the EU and UK cosmetics portals. We then have to get labels redesigned and order custom bottles. We only use glass in our packaging. All of these, when added up become prohibitive for us to launch samples at this stage. We have tested spraying our perfumes on tester paper strips but essential oils behave completely differently to synthetic perfumes and the scents did not hold up the way we had hoped.

What you should expect from these perfumes

What we are trying to do here at Haoma is completely getting rid of all processed ingredients, all harmful chemicals, all preservatives and emulsifiers. We only use edible, pure, certified organic and certified vegan ingredients of the highest quality which in turn is better for both humankind and our planet. We would like to note however if you have not used a fully natural perfume before, you will notice our perfumes have a completely different scent profile. Around 99% of perfumes on the market use synthetic fragrances. Even ‘natural’ brands like Aveda, Lush, Aesop, L’Occitane, Eden all use synthetic fragrances in their perfumes, these are generally listed as ‘perfume’ , ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ in the ingredients list. These aforementioned terms by law do not have to be disclosed further and can be made up of anything including very toxic materials. Our advice is that you look at the full ingredients lists of your favourite perfumes (when the company actually discloses them as most even do not). If you spot any ‘perfume/parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ listed in the ingredients list, it means they use synthetic molecules in their perfumes. It means they simply do not want to tell you exactly what they put inside their perfumes and hide behind the loophole in the law. This enables them to add anything they wish inside their products without having to disclose. We are highly against this practice which dominates 99% of the market. There are numerous studies of synthetic fragrances and how they impact our health. Some companies will say 'parfum / perfume / fragrance' in their ingredients list but add an asterisk * that reads something similar to the following: "*made with essential oils / blend of natural oils". If they indeed use essential oils, they would disclose them instead of using the parfum/fragrance terms which only exist as blanket terms to conceal ingredients. Here at Haoma we are extremely proud of our perfumes and claim that we are one of the handful companies in the entire world that is unequivocally transparent. Our awards and reviews are a testimony to this. We are also very proud that all our perfumes are 100% British and handmade.

If you have never used an actual natural perfume before:

We understand that there is a market for every product but the perfume industry has changed the perceptions of smell in consumers for a very long time after the introduction of synthetic molecules. These are extremely cheap to produce and have a significantly different scent profile. These days everyone is so accustomed to these scents, they find natural smells ‘medicinal’ , and describe them as ‘health shop smell’ or 'hippie smell’. Unfortunately it is a fact that natural scents will never smell the way synthetic ones do. This will not change with formulation changes or technological advancements either. They are just not meant to smell like that. We trust that as a society we will once more learn to appreciate and get used to the natural scents however unfortunately big perfume producers in the world are working hard to stop this. This is due to the price advantage. Let us give you an example. Organic Myrrh essential oil is around £1000 per kilogram and we use this in our formulations, if we were to buy it as a synthetic ingredient it would cost us around £10 for the same quantity. Big perfume producers love to keep their prices low and mass produce, but this is not possible with natural ingredients so there is always a push to go synthetic.

Now a little more information about our perfumes:

We have two varieties, single note perfumes and complex perfumes. Single note perfumes are Lavender, Ylang Ylang and Orange. Complex perfumes are No 1 and Frankincense & Myrrh.

With single note perfumes you will only notice one aroma, which is the name of the perfume. We only use the essential oil of that particular plant to give a clear, defined experience.

No 1 is a unisex perfume with very complex notes. First you will notice Geranium and slowly moving into Patchouli with all of the other undertones. It is intensely floral, woody and green. This is a long lasting perfume.

Frankincense & Myrrh on the other hand has a very deep smokey, leathery and woody aroma. All of the essential oils in this perfume are made of steam distillation of tree resins so you can expect an earthy scent.

Remember, even though these are perfumes, they are also aromatherapy products because they are made purely with essential oils so they will certainly have positive effects on your body and mind due to the small molecules in essential oils crossing the blood-brain barrier.

Earthy and suitable for all

Resinous and earthy. This perfume is suitable for all. Follow the instructions and you get an unusual fragrance with a hint of incense and a stronger scent of myrrh. It didn't last long on me but of course skin chemistry varies so you may be more fortunate.I love the purity of the ingredients and the non animal ingredients and non animal testing.
I look forward to trying more perfumes- wish there was a sample set and wish there was a jasmine or rose perfume but appreciate that the pure ingredients could be really expensive.

Natural and Subtle Fragrance

I find it hard to find perfumes that suit me but I love this. The fragrance is simple and earthy, exactly as you would expect the combination Frankincense and Myrrh to be. I like the fact that it isn’t overpowering but lingers gently. Grounding and Calming.

Simply Divine Frankincense and Myrrh

Love love love this ! Thank you Haoma! It is extremely difficult to source pure, natural perfumes however Haoma you have certainly cracked it with this wonderful one! Have tried so many including Aveda however they never sit right and I feel heady and sickly!
This is wonderful - I will be trying your others for sure 👏👏👏

Lovely scent but leaves stains.

This is really lovely scent and last surprisingly long for a natural perfume. But it leaves nasty yellow stains on clothes so make sure never use it on white shirt before work.

So glad to hear you like this perfume. We always recommend testing the fabric before application and recommend that the perfume goes on the skin rather than fabric. Essential oils can leave a mark especially on white however they should wash out with no permanent stains.
