We receive many enquiries about our perfumes every day, we understand how difficult it can be to purchase a perfume without trying it first. That is why we created this guide—to help you make an informed choice.
Testers
As an independent, fully handmade brand, we’re unfortunately unable to offer samples at this stage. Every size variation of our perfumes must undergo independent certification for both organic and vegan status. In addition, we must carry out laboratory testing, submit data to both EU and UK cosmetics portals, redesign labels, and source bespoke glass bottles. When combined, these requirements make producing samples prohibitive.
We also experimented with tester paper strips, but unlike synthetic perfumes, essential oils do not hold their scent well on paper. For this reason, we have chosen not to offer testers until we can do so without compromising quality.
What you should expect from these perfumes
At Haoma, our mission is to completely eliminate all processed ingredients, all harmful chemicals, all preservatives and emulsifiers and anything synthetic or made in a lab. We only work with edible, pure, certified organic and certified vegan ingredients of the highest quality. This commitment is not only better for humankind but also for our planet.
We would like to note, however, if you have not used a fully natural perfume before, you will notice our perfumes have a completely different scent profile. Around 99% of perfumes on the market use synthetic fragrances. Even ‘natural’ brands like Aveda, Lush, Aesop, L’Occitane and Eden all use synthetic fragrances in their perfumes, these are generally listed as ‘perfume’ , ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ in the ingredients list. These aforementioned terms by law do not have to be disclosed further and can be made up of anything including very toxic materials.
Our advice is that you look at the full ingredients lists of your favourite perfumes (when the company actually discloses them, as most do not). If you spot any ‘perfume/parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ listed in the ingredients list, it means synthetic molecules are being used. It means they simply do not want to tell you exactly what they put inside their perfumes and hide behind the loophole in the law. This enables them to add anything they wish inside their products without having to disclose. This practice dominates 99% of the market, and we are strongly against it. There are numerous studies on the negative health impacts of synthetic fragrances.
Some companies add an asterisk with wording like: “made with essential oils / blend of natural oils”. If essential oils were truly being used, they would be listed individually—not hidden behind these blanket terms.
Here at Haoma, we are extremely proud of our perfumes and claim that we are one of the handful of companies in the entire world that is unequivocally transparent. Our awards and reviews are a testimony to this. We are also very proud that all our perfumes are 100% British and handmade.
If you have never used an actual natural perfume before:
We understand that there is a market for every product, but the perfume industry has changed the perceptions of smell in consumers for a very long time after the introduction of synthetic molecules. These are extremely cheap to produce and have a significantly different scent profile which most people now associate with "luxury". Today, many people are so accustomed to synthetics that they describe natural scents as ‘medicinal’, ‘health shop smell’ or ‘hippie smell’.
Unfortunately it is a fact that natural scents will never smell the way synthetic ones do, nor should they. This is not a flaw in formulation nor will this change with technological advancements. They are simply not meant to smell like that. We trust that as a society we will once more learn to appreciate and get used to the natural scents, however unfortunately big perfume producers in the world are working hard to stop this. This is due to the price advantage.
Let us give you an example. Organic Myrrh essential oil is around £1,300 per kilogram and we use this in our formulations, if we were to buy it as a synthetic ingredient it would cost us around £10 for the same quantity. Big perfume producers love to keep their prices low and mass produce, but this is not possible with natural ingredients so there is always a push to go synthetic. This price gap explains why large perfume houses prefer synthetics, and why natural scents remain rare.
At Haoma, we believe in re-educating the senses and helping people rediscover the richness of authentic botanicals.
Now a little more information about our perfumes:
We currently offer two types of perfumes—Single Note Perfumes and Complex Perfumes:
Single Note Perfumes
-
Lavender – a calming, floral classic
-
Ylang Ylang – exotic, sensual, and sweet
-
Orange – bright, uplifting, and fresh
With single note perfumes you will only notice one aroma, which is the name of the perfume. We only use the essential oil of that particular plant to give a clear, defined experience.
Complex Perfumes
-
No. 1 – a unisex fragrance with layers of geranium, patchouli, and green woody undertones. Floral, earthy, and long-lasting.
-
Frankincense & Myrrh – deep, smoky, leathery, and woody. Composed entirely of steam-distilled tree resins, offering a rich, earthy aroma.
Because our fragrances are made purely from essential oils, they are also aromatherapy products. Essential oil molecules cross the blood–brain barrier, meaning they can positively influence mood, well-being, and even physiological responses—offering more than just a beautiful scent.
